Overview
The Baker WinAST is a state-of-the-art, fully automated quality control system purpose-built for electric motor manufacturers. Designed to handle high volumes with precision, it can test thousands of AC and DC motors daily, ranging from fractional horsepower up to 5,000 hp.
This semi-custom testing solution represents more than 25 years of innovation in motor quality assurance, delivering reliable fault detection that prevents dead-on-arrival (DOA) motors and premature field failures. Built to withstand rigorous industrial use, the Baker WinAST provides manufacturers with the diagnostic confidence needed to maintain consistent production quality.
Through its intuitive Windows-based interface, users benefit from automated testing sequences, clear data analysis, and XML-based reporting that seamlessly integrates with ISO quality standards. The system's menu-driven design streamlines operations while maintaining the technical depth required for comprehensive motor diagnostics.
Unlike other volume manufacturing test approaches, this system does not require a master winding to perform routine production tests, nor does an operator need to set test voltages or pass/fail limits when production is switched to another motor model. All test parameters are programmed into a master "known-good" data file, an operation that can be performed in minutes and permanently stored on the system's hard drive.
The Baker WinAST's advanced capabilities include surge testing, hipot testing, resistance testing, and inductance measurement. Each test method targets specific fault types, creating a comprehensive diagnostic framework that identifies insulation weaknesses, turn-to-turn faults, connection problems, and winding imbalances before they compromise motor reliability.
Surge Testing: Uses high-voltage impulse testing to detect insulation faults between turns, coils, and phases, problems that standard low-voltage tests cannot identify. The system compares waveforms against reference patterns, calculating percentage differences to provide precise fault detection.
Hipot Testing: Employs micro-arc detection in both AC and DC hipot tests to identify ground faults and phase-to-phase insulation weaknesses. Capacitive compensation capability measures resistive current leakage rather than total leakage, improving diagnostic accuracy.
Resistance and Inductance Testing: Kelvin connections ensure accurate low-resistance measurements, detecting erroneous turn counts, poor connections, and incorrect wire sizes. Temperature correction standardises resistance values to 25°C for consistent analysis.
Customisable to meet varying production demands, the Baker WinAST ensures that only reliable, quality-assured motors leave the manufacturing line. Every system is built to customer specifications using proven, reliable standard components in a cabinet-style rack design.
Additional capabilities include field mapping tests for pole count verification, auxiliary relay matrices for different winding configurations, and rotation-direction testing using induction and Hall-effect sensors.
